The Ener-J Wi-Fi Smart LED Colour Changing Strip Kit lets you brighten up even the darkest of corners with accent lighting that you can control with your mobile phone or your voice.
Ener-J’s Wi-Fi Smart LED Colour Changing Strip Kit (£31.95 March 2021) offers an easy way to add a splash of colour to your home. The thin, flexible strip contains LEDs that emit both white and coloured light that you control using the ENERJSMART App from your mobile phone and with Alexa and Google voice commands.
Design & Features
The Ener’J Light Strip is 1 cm wide and 5 metres long with 60 LED’s per metre, a total of 300 LEDs. 12lm per LED, can display 16 million colours and lasts up to 20,000 hours.
You can attach the strip to almost any surface using the double-sided tape on the back of the strip, and you can cut the strip every three LED’s to make it fit into tight spaces, but once you cut it, you can’t reconnect the unused segments.
The strip comes with a UK male plug on one end of the strip and to the included power adapter. The controller has a button that lets you turn the strip on and off and lets you cycle through the various pre-sets, and it contains a 2.4GHz Wi-Fi radio that connects the strip to your home network, which means it doesn’t require a hub like many other light strips.
The strip can be controlled with your phone via the ENERJSMART mobile app (for Android and iOS). It doesn’t support Apple’s HomeKit, but it works with Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant voice commands and it supports IFTTT applets that allow it to work with other smart devices.
Installation & Performance
Installing the light strip is considerably easy once you have the ENERJSMART App installed. Download the app and create an account, then click the plus icon in the top right of the screen then select Light Source Wi-Fi. After a few seconds it began flashing green and orange, so I tapped Next and used my phone’s Wi-Fi settings to connect to the strip. After five seconds I was instructed to select my home Wi-Fi SSID and enter my password, and after another few seconds the strip turned white and was connected to my network. It was also automatically added to my Alexa device list. I gave the strip a name, updated the firmware, and the installation was finished. Once the app is installed you’ll see the name of the strip and the current colour and brightness level. From here you have complete control including colour adjustment, dimming, scene change, timer mode, on/off and delay off.
While not bright enough to illuminate an entire room, the Ener-J strip worked perfectly as accent lighting around my living room. It responded instantly to app commands to turn on and off and to change colour. The Alexa integration also worked without any problems. I was able to turn the strip on and off, change colours, and activate scenes using voice commands.
If you’re looking to add a little colour to your home at an affordable price, defiantly consider the Ener-J Wi-Fi Smart LED Colour Changing Strip. It’s fairly easy to install and can be cut to fit your specific needs, and it delivers both colourful and white lighting. The ENERJSMART app lets you create scenes to control multiple Ener-J devices at once, and you can use IFTTT applets to have third-party devices trigger the strip.
